Geothermal energy, solar energy, wind power: a good mix of different renewable energy sources is the long-term goal of Ruhr University. Energy potentials are currently being surveyed. We will keep you informed about measures and progress here.

Geothermal energy

The expansion of geothermal energy is a key component of Ruhr University's energy strategy. The possibilities for geothermal energy are always examined for new buildings.

First geothermal plant

The ID building already has a geothermal system for building temperature control, which is currently undergoing technical testing with the aim of transferring the system into regular operation to provide heat in the building.

Research location for the heat transition

Ruhr University has been cooperating with the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy since 2022

In 2023, heat from geothermal energy from Fraunhofer IEG research facilities will be fed into Ruhr University's district heating network and used for heating.

PUSH-IT research project

Ruhr University is participating in the European research project "PUSH-IT" (Piloting Underground Seasonal Heat Storage in geothermal reservoirs). Ruhr University's waste heat sources are to be identified by 2026. How can waste heat be fed into underground geothermal reservoirs and extracted again when needed?

Photovoltaics

The expansion of photovoltaics (PV) is another key component of Ruhr University's energy strategy. The structural possibilities of implementation have been examined by the Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW for every renovation and new building since 2021.

First photovoltaic system

Ruhr University's first photovoltaic system has been installed on the roof of the ZESS research building. More will follow on new buildings.

Planning and installation of a PV system on the THINK building
Planning and installation of a PV system on the IAN building
Planning of PV systems in the GC, NA and Parkhaus West buildings
Determining the PV potential of other buildings in renovation and new construction projects

Wind energy

It is not possible to erect a wind turbine as the necessary distances cannot be maintained due to the dense population. Opportunities to participate in wind power plants are currently being sought. The result is still pending.
