Mobility on campus

This collection of questions was created in cooperation with the RUB mobility officers. We have collected frequently asked questions and answered them for you.

What falls within the remit of "on-campus mobility"?

RUB takes care of tasks related to mobility on campus; the route to campus is mainly the responsibility of the city.

Areas of responsibility are:

  • Car (parking without charging and parking space management)
  • Bicycle (parking without charging and accompanying infrastructure)
  • eMobility
  • Routing and accessibility
  • Quality of stay
  • Business trips
  • Business travel guidelines
Are there bicycle repair facilities on campus?

Yes, there is an AStA bicycle self-help workshop in the "glass box" on the Nordforum.

The RUB also offers bicycle repair stations. These are located at HGB on G-Nordstraße and HNC on N-Nordstraße.

Is it possible to shower on campus if you arrive by bike?

There are currently no showers for cyclists on campus. The overall mobility measures on campus project includes an analysis of which showers on campus are suitable for release.

Will there soon be more bike boxes? Why are the bike boxes fully booked?

Fahrradbox

There are currently 9 bicycle boxes with a total of 210 parking spaces. The bike boxes are 100% overbooked, so that there are currently 420 spaces available. A further 3 bicycle boxes with a total of 64 spaces (i.e. with 128 bookable spaces) are being built at MB Süd, MA Süd and Zemos. These are expected to go into operation in winter semester 24/25.

You can find more information here.

Can I park my PEDELEC in the bike boxes?

Yes, that is possible. There is enough space available.

Can I charge my electric vehicle at RUB?

Unfortunately, RUB is not yet able to provide electricity for charging private e-vehicles. This is set to change as part of the mobility strategy. We are currently examining a variety of legal and technical framework conditions to which RUB, as a public corporation, is subject when setting up an e-charging infrastructure for the "small town campus".

We will report here as soon as we have any news.

Why is car parking free, while bicycle boxes cost something?

In 2012, a survey conducted as part of the "MOVE" project revealed that the majority of RUB members are willing to pay a small usage fee for a secure bicycle parking space. The usage fee is also intended to encourage people to cancel a bicycle parking space that is no longer needed and make it available to the general public again.

Is it possible to lease a bike with a job bike?

Unfortunately not. Bicycle leasing by means of deferred compensation is currently not possible in the public sector. Collective agreements such as the TV-L and TVöD only allow deferred compensation for pension schemes. Work is underway to change these regulations, but no solution is in sight in the short term. Alternatively, there are discount agreements with various bicycle dealers for employees and students. Further information can be found here.

Are there bike sharing systems on campus?
