The alternative Christmas tree

The alternative Christmas tree is a recurring campaign by Students@NHB.

This 3-metre high and 1.50-metre wide Christmas tree, made entirely from recycled and recyclable cardboard, has stood in the Mensa foyer every Christmas since 2022 and welcomes visitors who take part in the annual hands-on campaign. The Christmas tree was donated by treedom at the time.

Did you know that not only is an artificial Christmas tree made of plastic bad for the climate, but that real Christmas trees can also harm the environment? In Germany, there is no natural occurrence of the most popular Christmas tree species: the Nordmann fir and the blue spruce. These firs are grown in plantations especially for Christmas using fertilizers and pesticides, whereby the production conditions in the cultures vary greatly and are usually not transparent for consumers. Particularly in the case of trees from abroad, it is often not clear which products are used.

What can you do?

If you don't want to do without a real Christmas tree, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) recommends buying trees that are grown in the region and bear the organic or FSC seal for sustainable forestry. Organic trees are usually grown in mixed cultures. This protects them from pests so that no or fewer pesticides are used. According to the UBA, it is even better to cut your own trees. Many forest owners, foresters and various BUND groups offer the opportunity to cut your own tree in the forest under supervision. In keeping with the motto "give and take", we would be delighted if you planted a tree for the future that will benefit other people in the future.

How do you plant a tree?

Simply scan the QR code printed on the tree, select the tree species and give the tree a name. Your tree will be photographed, geolocated and given its own profile, where updates from the project will be published. The fruits of your tree belong to the local people. They are a source of food and generate income. Your tree grows and absorbs CO2. Not only are you doing something good for people and nature, but it's also a great gift idea for Christmas. A simple gesture with a big impact!
