Management of Resources and Waste
At Ruhr University, we want to use resources sustainably and efficiently, and implement environmental and climate protection measures in our operations. We pay attention to mindful disposal and resource-conserving recycling management. Sustainability criteria are taken into account in the procurement and consumption of materials.

Examples of efficient resource management at Ruhr University:
Desk sharing in administration
The way of working has changed (not least due to Corona and flexible working). Desk sharing as a form of organization is intended on the one hand to meet the different needs of employees, and on the other hand to bring about optimal use of space in terms of - energy and financial - sustainability.

Furniture storage for RUB employees
Office and laboratory furniture is stored and managed in the RUB central warehouse. In the case of new furniture, the first step is to look through the stock and use furniture from the stock according to need and possibilities.
In our used furniture warehouse, employees can find a considerable selection of office furniture in good condition and some of it brand new.
The inventory is managed by the warehouse logistics warehouse management system. The needs of RUB employees are thus covered many times and sustainably. RUB employees can get in touch via the Service Portal if they are interested..
Alternative green space management
A small flock of sheep helps with landscape maintenance in the Botanical Garden. Along the way, the animals ensure more ecological diversity.
Sustainability can be this cute: sheep graze on the meadows of the Botanic Garden. With their appetite for grass and wild plants, they lend a hand to the gardeners, who can devote themselves to tasks other than mowing the lawn.
Collection box for cell phones and corks
On the first floor of the University Library, next to the cell phone collection box, you will find a bucket for collecting wine and champagne corks. The corks go to the Asta's Repair Café and the cell phones to NABU; the corks are used for recycling. Collected cell phones are given to a telecommunications company, which donates a fixed sum annually to NABU, which goes into the NABU insect protection fund.
Sustainable disposal
Waste is to be avoided in first priority, recycled in second priority and disposed of in third priority.
The proper and environmentally sound disposal of waste at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum is organized centrally by the employees of the Department of Waste Disposal, Hazardous Materials and Environmental Protection.
